Salzburg is the quintessential Austrian city, full of history and charm. It’s also one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, with a stunning setting on the River Salzach and a wealth of art and culture to explore. The city’s popularity means it gets busy during summer months but if you’re looking for a romantic weekend away then there are plenty of things to do in this historic town.
June is the best time to visit Salzburg. The weather is good and there are plenty of things to see and do.
- There’s a festival in July called the Salzburg Festival, which brings in tons of people from all over Europe who come to see performances by famous musicians and dancers. This makes it fun because you’ll get some great music while also getting a glimpse into their culture as they enjoy themselves!
- Many people go hiking during this time because it’s warm enough that year round activities like skiing can be done without having to worry about being cold (or even wet).

For many visitors, September is the best time to visit Salzburg. The weather is still warm and sunny, so you can take a walk outside without having to worry about being cold or wet. The crowds are gone as well; people typically leave in late summer or early fall rather than during winter months when they begin their holiday trips home. There is still plenty to see at this time of year: museums are less crowded because there aren’t as many tourists around anymore; temperatures are cooler (but not too low); and fall colors start showing up around mid-September near lakes like Workhorse and Attires (the two largest lakes surrounding Salzburg).
October is a great time to visit Salzburg. The weather is still good, the autumn colours are at their peak and there’s less tourists around. If you’re planning on going during this month, be sure not to schedule your visit for October 1st or 10th because these days are considered unlucky by many people!
If you want to check out the Christmas markets without making a big deal out of it, then perhaps September or November would be better options than February/March when everything is closed down anyway (because of Carnival).
If you’re looking for a great time to visit Salzburg, winter is when it happens. The city is full of Christmas markets, snow and skiing. It’s also the perfect time to experience the festive atmosphere that sets Salzburg apart from other places in Europe.
If you’re visiting around Christmas or New Year’s Eve (or both), then there are two things to consider: how many days are left until Christmas Day and how much snow has fallen over those days? When we visited Salzburg last year, they had just finished their biggest storm since 2006 and so we knew that there would be plenty of snow on our arrival day but luckily there weren’t too many queues at attractions such as St Johann am Laches or the Hohensalzburg Fortress because most people were shivering outside waiting for good weather!
